And the "Kirby Your Enthusiasm!" Winners Are......

It started months ago with an idea from our Custom Board co-moderator NiteOwl - to base our next AFB Custom Contest on a Jack Kirby theme. It was an inspired idea - after all, "The King" has left us with no shortage of amazing characters to choose from!

What followed was a great deal of enthusiasm and discussion and lots of hard work which culminated in what we all feel is our best Custom Contest yet - not only did we receive the most entries yet, we also had fantastic participation from the AFB Forum Community in commenting on the entries and voting on the winners. Many thanks to everyone who participated!

Each member who voted assigned 3 points to their favourite custom, 2 points to their second favourite and 1 point to their third choice. While our first place winner ran away with the most votes, we in fact had a tie for second place and our third place winner was only one point behind those two!

You can see all of the fabulous entries here, but without further ado, here are our "Kirby Your Enthusiasm!" Winners!

First Place: Mangog by fishmilkshake

Second Place (tie): Big Barda by FB and Baron Strucker by Andy

Third Place: The Living Totem by NiteOwl

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who entered and voted! Stay tuned for an announcement regarding the theme of our first Custom Comp for 2012 shortly!

You can discuss the winners and entries at the AFB Forum, and comment here to enter the December AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Win the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in AFB's amazing new Contest!

I often explain the excitement that surrounds the San Diego Comic-Con for those of use who engage in the various forms of geekery celebrated there by saying “It’s one of my people’s religious festivals.” It’s a time of great excitement, and for we toy collectors it’s also a time of great avarice as we drool over newly announced collectibles and scrabble for the various exclusive pieces on offer.

As has become a tradition here at AFB, I like to use this time as a time to give something back, and this year we’re offering the biggest prize we’ve ever had - the Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man! Stay Puft comes in at a whopping 20 inches tall, and the winner of this competition will receive him in his carry case which converts to a diorama for display. It’s a great prize!!

I’m sure everyone will understand that a prize as big as this one will require some effort to win, and we are looking forward to some great entries in what we’re calling “Sing a Song for Stay Puft”. Basically, we’re looking for the person who can explain why they want to win Stay Puft in most creative and entertaining way.

Your “song” for Stay Puft doesn’t have to be musical - I just chose that title because it was allterative. You could present your entry as:
  • a comic / comic strip
  • a video
  • an animation
  • something else entirely different

Whatever it is, it needs to communicate exactly why you want Stay Puft and why you should be the winner. It also needs to be kept moderately safe for work - we aim to be a family friendly site, after all!

The winner will be judged by the Admins of the AFB Forum - fishmilkshake, dozymuppet and FB. There *may* also be some smaller prizes on offer for honourable mentions if the standard is good enough!

The prize or prizes will be sent to the winner from Australia. If the prize is going overseas, it will be sent by first class international mail. The winner may choose to add their own funds for express shipping and or insurance if desired.

Entries will be submitted via the AFB Forum - new members are very welcome to register and enter, but we do ask that you have a minimum post count of 10 by the time the competition closes.

Since we’re expecting big things, we’re going to give a decent time frame for people to prepare their entries. The competition will be open for three weeks and will close at 11:59PM GMT+10 on Sunday 4th September 2011.

You can discuss the competition in the Sing a Song for Stay Puft discussion thread at the AFB Forum.

You can submit your entries at the Sing a Song for Stay Puft Official Entry Thread at the AFB Forum.

The winning entries will be announced and featured here at the blog.

Let’s get creative! Looking forward to your entries!

First off, thanks to everyone who commented on last month’s blog posts. Congratulations to AFB Forum Member super-duper-toybox for being our randomly selected winner this month - I believe he is a repeat winner too! Once we hear from s-d-t, his choice of either the DC Universe Classics Wave 17 White Lantern Hal Jordan or the Marvel Universe Doctor Strange figure will be on the way when available from Mike’s Comics N’ Stuff.

Now to July’s Contest: on offer are two great prizes, either the Real Ghostbusters Minimates Series 1 or the Captain Boomerang figure from DC Universe Classics Wave 18!

A few bits and pieces:

every genuine comment on a post from the calendar month will be eligible for receiving the prize. I’m going to stick to my own time zone and call it at 23:59:59 Australian Eastern Standard Time – best to comment often and comment early!
  • if my super scientific randomizer comment selector system chooses an Anonymous comment, I’ll skip it and go again – you need to leave a name, a link, your AFB Forum username or email addy so that I can contact you if you are the winner. Blogger comments allows you to do this, as long as your profile is not set to private – check your settings.
  • you will be given a choice of one of the two figures on offer from the month’s contest – figures will be in their original packaging.
  • figures will be sent by first class mail within the US (Mike is sending them, remember) and first class international to any overseas winner. An overseas winner can elect to chip in for Priority Mail or Insurance, but otherwise we can’t take any responsibility for a parcel that doesn’t arrive – after all this is coming out of AFB’s not dreadfully deep pockets!

And the Toy Lines! Winner is.......

Thanks to everyone who voted for the ultimate winner of our Toy Lines! Caption Contest. It was hard enough for me to choose the winners of each of the four rounds, so handing over the choice to the fans was a big relief!

It was tight there for awhile, but in the end, one entry ran away with the prize with just over 50% of the vote.

Please give a warm round of applause to our Toy Lines! Overall Winner - bubbashelby!

This is the entry that got bubbashelby over the line:

As our Toy Lines! Winner, bubbashelby will receive an unopened set of Masters of the Universe Classics Eternian Palace Guards. Bubba - pls send me your postal address at the AFB Forum!

You can this at the AFB Forum, and you can comment on this post to enter the June AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Stay tuned for the next installment of Toy Lines!

Until next time!

It's Voting Time! Help decide the "Toy Lines!" Overall Winner!

They came, they saw, and they were funny.

Four AFB readers rose above the rest to win their individual "Toy Lines!" Rounds, each providing the funniest captions for a picture featuring some of my very own action figures.

Now, one must rise above the rest. Three journeys will come an end, while only one "Toy Lines!" dream will survive.

(Insert other reality television jargon here. Be sure to use "journey" liberally.)

I've had my go at choosing the winners of each round - now it's your turn to choose the overall "Toy Lines" Winner!

To have your say - have a reminder look at the four Round Winners below, and the go over to the poll on the right to select your favourite! You can also use the link the poll to share the poll with others so that they can vote too.

The voting closes at 23:59 GMT+10 on 18 June 2011. The results will be hidden until voting closes.

The winner will be announced here at the blog and will receive an unopened set of Masters of the Universe Classics Eternian Palace Guards!

Here are your choices:

Round One: bubbashelby

Round Two: fishmilkshake

Round Three: NiteOwl

Round Four: Freak Studio

Happy voting! And of course, you can comment on this post to enter the June AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Until next time!

Toy Lines! Caption Contest - Round Four Winner!

First off, many thanks to everyone who entered the fourth and final round of "Toy Lines!", our new caption contest! My apologies for the extended round - real life and the busy-ness of the wrap-up of the '70s Custom Contest got the better of me!

The task for Round Four was to add captions to a photo featuring DC Universe Classics Wave 16 Mercury, and while the task of captioning a solo picture may have deterred some, once again our entrants rose the challenge!

As always, I'm going with the entry that made me laugh the loudest. Congratulations to our Round Four winner, Freak Studio! Here's his hilarious entry:

Freak Studio's Round Four Winner will face off against the winners from the three previous rounds in a public vote here on the blog, with the winner receiving our prize, which is a Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Eternian Palace Guards Two Pack,  like the one reviewed here. The prize will be an unopened version still sealed in its white mailer box.

This was the last chance to enter to win, so now it's on to choosing the Contest Winner from the four Round Winners. Tomorrow I'll have a poll up to make that process happen!

In the meantime, you can discuss Round Four's efforts at the AFB Forum, and comment on this post to enter the June AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Until next time!

Toy Lines! The AFB Comment Contest - Round Three!

First off, many thanks to everyone who entered the second round of "Toy Lines!", our new caption contest! There were some really wonderful entries in Round Two - you can see them all by clicking here. Do have a look as they are well worth it!

The task for Round Two was to add captions to a photo featuring Masters of the Universe's He-Man, Grizzlor and Shadow Beast, and once again our entrants rose the challenge!

Thankfully, it's only my job to choose the winners of each round, because that is challenging enough!! The ultimate winner will be chosen by the readers of AFB!

As always, I'm going with the entry that made me laugh the loudest. Congratulations to our Round Two winner, fishmilkshake! Here's his hilarious entry:

Fishmilkshake's Round Two Winner will face off against the winners from the other three rounds in a public vote here on the blog, with the winner receiving our prize, which is a Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Eternian Palace Guards Two Pack,  like the one reviewed here. The prize will be an unopened version still sealed in its white mailer box.

That means there are still three chances to win, and the next challenge is just below. See what fun can you have with this one:

There will be four rounds of "Toy Lines!", each lasting 10 or so days. The winners of each round will be decided by me, and once all four rounds are over, the four winning photos will be put up to a vote here on the site for the AFB Readership to decide the ultimate winner.

Here are the basic rules:

  • You are allowed to save your own copy of the photo for each round and edit it to present your entry.

  • Only one entry per person per round is allowed. You may enter each round, even if you have won a previous round.

  • You do not have to give "lines" to every toy in the photo. How you script it is up to you!

  • Entries must be posted at the AFB Forum in the thread for each round - Round Three is here

  • Every 10 (or so) days I will announce the winner for the previous round here at the blog and post a new photo for a new round

  • Once we have completed four rounds, I will post the four winning photos here at the blog and post a poll for AFB readers to vote for the winner. This will be a blind poll and will run for 15 days.

  • The reader vote will determine the winner. The winner will receive the MOTUC Eternian Palace Guards Two-Pack with standard shipping. The winner may add express shipping or insurance at his/her own expense.

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next great round! Also, you can of course comment on this post to enter the April AFB Comment of the Month Contest!

Until next time!
